Why Change Light Bulbs to LED

The topic of LED bulbs interested me for a long time. I installed the first LED lamp at home on April 2021 and it still works. By October 2021, not a single incandescent lamp was left in my house – all the lighting was LED. June 24, 2022we launched a website with the results of testing LED lamps.

Many people ask me why to change the light bulbs to LED and what it gives.

First of all, LED bulbs provide freedom and comfort. You no longer need to worry about saving electricity: when the light bulb consumes 7 W, and not 60, you can simply leave it on. Before I always turned off the light in the corridor, now it is always on when I’m at home. It’s more convenient this way.

No need to worry about replacing burnt-out bulbs. LED lamps do not burn out (more precisely, they almost do not burn out – in two years I have died two dimmable “candles” – Navigator and Civilight, the other ten lamps of these types are on).

And finally, the savings. Now my average electricity bill is 390 rubles a month.

I made an approximate calculation of the cost of lighting a two-room apartment with conventional and LED lamps.

Why Change Light Bulbs to LED

Of course, the calculation is very rough. Nevertheless, 3-4 thousand rubles a year is a very real saving for an average apartment. Pay attention to the lighting times of the lamps. Manufacturers promise 1000 hours of incandescent lamp operation (in reality, the bulbs often burn out much earlier), but even if the lamps run for 1000 hours, they will have to be changed in the hallway and room twice a year, and once in the kitchen and bedroom. With an average cost of a lamp of 20 rubles, it will take another 460 rubles.

A set of LED lamps for this average apartment, if you buy them at Ikea, will cost 6,782 rubles (7 E27 10W lamps for 499 rubles, 11 8W candles for 299 rubles) and they will pay off in less than two years.

Note that Ikea LED bulbs are far from the most efficient. There are already 8 W and even 6 W lamps, giving the same luminous flux as a 60 W incandescent lamp and 6 W “candles” and even 4 W with a luminous flux like a 40 W incandescent lamp.
Good LED bulbs provide the same comfortable light as incandescent bulbs and you won’t be able to tell the difference between them and incandescent bulbs. In addition, LED lamps have several other advantages:

• Energy saving 6-10 times.
• Slight heating. Lamps do not heat the room when it is already hot. The child will not get burned by the light bulb in the table lamp.
• Durability. The lamps do not need to be changed every six months. Manufacturers promise 25-50 thousand hours of work. This is more than 11-22 years with daily use of 6 hours.
• Work without changing brightness in a wide voltage range, resistance to voltage surges in the network.

Of course, there are also disadvantages:

• High price. A good LED lamp cannot cost less than 300 rubles.
• Most LED lamps do not support dimming (dimming), and even special dimmable lamps do not always work correctly with different dimmer models and do not allow you to set a very low brightness level.
• Not all LED lamps work correctly with switches that have an indicator (lamps may flash or dim when the switch is off), but most good lamps work correctly.
• A large number of low-quality LED lamps (with much lower brightness, uncomfortable color, low CRI (because of this, the color of objects may be distorted), flickering).

It is due to the fact that there is a lot of low-quality LED lamps on the market and many manufacturers deceive buyers by overestimating the parameters of lamps, and I created a project to test LED lamps http://lamptest.ru. With the help of this site, you can choose lamps that will fully replace incandescent lamps and will delight you for many years.

And one more, last argument in favor of buying LED lamps. Do not treat them like consumables. You buy them for a long time. Treat them the same way as the chandelier or lamp in which you install them, because most likely someday you will replace them together because the LED bulbs will never burn out.

Sharing is caring!
